About the San Dieguito Heritage Museum
The San Dieguito Heritage Museum was founded in 1988 to collect, preserve, and interpret the history of the San Dieguito River area of coastal San Diego County. Its scope spans the communities of Leucadia, Encinitas, Olivenhain, Cardiff, Solana Beach, Del Mar, and Rancho Santa Fe, telling the shared story of this stretch of Southern California.
The museum is housed at the Heritage Ranch, a rustic and distinctive property in the city of Encinitas at 450 Quail Gardens Drive, where historic structures and outdoor exhibits create a hands-on setting for exploring the region's past.
Exhibits and Programs
- Olivenhain Farms — an interactive homesteading exhibit that brings the area's rich history of homesteading to life, complete with animals at the Ranch.
- Teten House — a historic house on the grounds, accompanied by an expanding Native Plants exhibit and native plant garden.
- Historian in Training — a youth program for ages 12 and up to work alongside museum staff during field trips, events, and activities.
- Family programming such as seasonal summer camps for children of varying ages.
