About the Museum
Preserves narrow-gauge and standard railroad equipment that opened Colorado's mountains. Operating collection includes steam locomotives and historic rolling stock.
Located in Golden, the Colorado Railroad Museum preserves the narrow-gauge and standard-gauge equipment that opened Colorado's mountains to mining, settlement, and commerce. The museum keeps its motto "Still on Track," operating not only as a static collection but as a living railroad with train rides, a working roundhouse, and an active restoration crew that returns historic equipment to operating condition.
Things to See and Do
The museum blends exhibits with hands-on railroading experiences:
- Exhibits of historic steam locomotives and rolling stock from Colorado's railroads
- Train rides pulled by a diesel-electric locomotive, with expanded frequency during the summer season
- Guided walking tours offered on Fridays as an introduction to the museum and the railroads' impact on Colorado
- Signature seasonal events such as Day Out with Thomas, the Polar Express train ride, and Colorado Railroad Heritage Week
- A research library, education programs for youth and adults, and a working roundhouse
