About the History Center
Unique collaborative hub coordinating over a dozen historical organizations across DeKalb County including Blackwell History of Education Museum, Ellwood House Museum, and local societies in Hinckley, Kirkland, Sandwich, and Sycamore.
Mission and Collaboration
The DeKalb County History Center is committed to exploring local history from diverse perspectives, gathering people together through exhibits, programs, and research. The Center engages with people of various backgrounds to ensure they see themselves in local history, inspiring visitors to apply this knowledge to enlighten future decisions. A key part of the Center's mission involves building the capacity of local historical organizations by providing resources and opportunities for collaboration across the county.
Award-Winning Programs
In partnership with the Ellwood House Museum, the History Center developed "Arts in Action," a groundbreaking project investigating the history of race relations in DeKalb County through historical research and collaboration with contemporary artists. This innovative program earned the Illinois Association of Museums' Award for Superior Achievement in April 2023. The Center also collaborates on exhibits like "Sharing Stories," which explores themes of fear, exclusion, community, and hope through firsthand accounts and historical research, demonstrating the Center's commitment to presenting difficult histories with honesty and educational value.
Partner Organizations
The History Center coordinates with premier institutions including the Ellwood House Museum, home to barbed wire entrepreneur Isaac Ellwood's 1879 Victorian mansion and 6,000 square feet of exhibit space. The Blackwell History of Education Museum and numerous local historical societies throughout the county benefit from the Center's collaborative approach, creating a network that preserves and shares DeKalb County's diverse heritage.
