About the Historical Society
Founded in 1899, the Illinois State Historical Society promotes preservation, publication, teaching, and awareness of Illinois history through its journals, programs, and historical markers initiative. The Society operates independently and encourages participation from university scholars to local historians.
Publications and Research
The Society publishes two distinguished periodicals that serve different audiences. The Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society, established in 1908, is a peer-reviewed scholarly publication welcoming articles about history, literature, art, technology, law, and other subjects related to Illinois and the Midwest. Illinois Heritage, the Society's popular history magazine founded in 1997, is published six times yearly and encourages professional and amateur historians, museum professionals, teachers, genealogists, and journalists to explore Prairie State history for a broad audience. Both publications are available as membership benefits.
Programs and Recognition
The ISHS accomplishes its mission through several key programs. The Annual Illinois History Symposium brings together history enthusiasts to present research and discuss how Illinois history can be researched and disseminated. The Centennial Awards Program honors businesses and organizations that have operated continuously in Illinois for 100 years or more, celebrating their contributions to the state's economic and social fabric. The Society also offers scholarships, workshops, and an annual tour that explores significant historical sites across the state.
The Society's Historical Markers program, initiated in the early 1900s as paved highway mileage increased, promotes local historical events with broader impact and fosters community pride while serving as a tourism tool. Markers must have statewide or national significance and are available in two sizes, accommodating either 100 or 250 words. The Society's business offices are located in Springfield at 521 East Washington Street, positioning it at the heart of Abraham Lincoln's Illinois.
Planning Your Visit
As a not-for-profit membership organization, the Illinois State Historical Society depends on membership dues, gifts, bequests, and foundation grants to support, preserve, and disseminate the story of Illinois and its people. Membership supports the Society's publications, awards, scholarships, and the statewide historical markers program, and welcomes everyone from university scholars and K-12 teachers to local historians and volunteers.
