About the Historical Society

Formed in 1955, the Society operates the George Clayson House Museum (built 1873) and adjoining Carriage House. Collections include extensive archives with yearbooks, obituaries, photos of early families and homes, and Palatine's first fire engine. Free tours available during open hours.

The George Clayson House

The George Clayson House, a Second Empire home located at 224 East Palatine Road, was built in 1873 by nurseryman and Palatine Village Board member George Clayson. Carefully restored to its 1890-1900 appearance, the house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 21, 1979, and opened to the public that October. The museum holds more than 1,000 treasures from Palatine's earliest days, with rooms furnished in authentic Victorian style. The parlor features rococo revival furnishings from the 1860s, while the sitting room and main bedroom showcase Eastlake pieces from the 1870s.

Collections and Archives

The Society maintains diverse collections including Victorian and Edwardian clothing and accessories, period toys, and an extensive textile collection of quilts, blankets, and linens. The Archive Room serves as a vital research resource, housing Palatine Township censuses from 1850 to 1930, cemetery books, agricultural census records, obituary files, and church records from St. Paul, St. John, and the Methodist Church. The archives also preserve thousands of historic photographs, high school yearbooks from Palatine and Fremd, village and township meeting ledgers, and family genealogies documenting the area's development.

Operated by dedicated volunteers and board members of the Palatine Historical Society and maintained by the Palatine Park District, the museum is open Tuesday 9 AM to 4 PM and Thursday 12 PM to 4 PM. The Society welcomes donations of historical artifacts, particularly wedding dresses and uniforms worn by Palatine residents. For tour and educational program information, visitors can call 847-991-6460.
