About the Organization

Preserves landscape where Tubman was born enslaved and later led dozens to freedom. Interprets Underground Railroad and Eastern Shore's role in freedom-seeking.

Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park preserves the landscapes of Maryland's Eastern Shore where Harriet Tubman was born into slavery and later returned to lead others to freedom. Tubman, the Underground Railroad's best-known conductor, was a deeply spiritual woman who lived her ideals and dedicated her life to freedom; before the Civil War she repeatedly risked her own life to guide some 70 enslaved people north to new lives of freedom. As she famously said, "I never ran my train off the track and I never lost a passenger." The park, administered by the National Park Service, protects the same landscapes Tubman used to carry herself and others away from slavery.
