Collections and Exhibits

As a Smithsonian Affiliate, the North Carolina Museum of History houses an extensive collection of more than 150,000 artifacts that tell the stories of the people who shaped the state. The museum's crown jewel is "The Story of North Carolina," a 20,000-square-foot award-winning exhibition that takes visitors on a journey through 14,000 years of historyβ€”from the state's earliest inhabitants through the 20th century. This interactive exploration features fascinating artifacts, multimedia presentations, and hands-on experiences designed for all ages.

Beyond the signature exhibition, the museum showcases the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, celebrating the state's legendary athletes and sports heritage. The diverse collection includes military history artifacts, decorative arts, and rotating special exhibits that add depth and variety to the museum experience. Monthly programs feature children's activities, craft demonstrations, and family events that bring North Carolina's rich heritage to life.
