About the North Fort Worth Historical Society
Preserving Stockyards History Since 1976
The North Fort Worth Historical Society (NFWHS) was founded by Charlie and Sue McCafferty and chartered in 1976 to preserve the Fort Worth Stockyards and North Fort Worth. For over 37 years, the society has researched and recorded the history of this part of Tarrant County, with the historical significance of the livestock and meatpacking industries and related businesses remaining their focus. When the railroad arrived in Fort Worth in 1876, the city became a major shipping point for livestock, leading to the construction of the Union Stockyards two and a half miles north of the courthouse in 1887.
Historic Preservation Achievements
The NFWHS has achieved significant milestones in historic preservation. In 1983, the society secured State Archaeological Landmark designation for Cowtown Coliseum, leading to the city of Fort Worth's restoration of this important structure in 1986. The society was also responsible for obtaining landmark status for the Fort Worth Stockyards entrance sign and Armour & Swift Plaza. In 1987, the NFWHS unveiled "The Bulldogger," a life-size bronze statue of Bill Pickett commemorating his contribution to rodeo, which was gifted to the city and now stands in the west courtyard of Cowtown Coliseum.
The Stockyards Museum
In 1989, the North Fort Worth Historical Society opened the Stockyards Museum in the historic Livestock Exchange Building, which was part of the Fort Worth Stockyards National Register Historic District listed in 1976 (including 46 contributing buildings). Today, the museum hosts thousands of visitors from around the world each year and continues to expand its facilities and collection. The society's mission is to educate the public about the history of the Fort Worth Stockyards and the crucial role North Fort Worth played in the development of the American cattle industry.
