About Sophienburg Museum and Archives

Preserving German-Texan Heritage Since 1933

Established in 1933 by residents of New Braunfels, the Sophienburg Museum and Archives occupies the historic site of the original 1845 Sophienburg fortress, which served as headquarters for the Adelsverein, the German colonization society that brought thousands of German immigrants to Texas. Named a Texas Historic Site, the museum contains an extensive collection of artifacts reflecting the history and rich German-Texan heritage of the area. In 2022, the Texas Travels Awards recognized the Sophienburg Museum as the best big-market museum in Texas.

The archives house over one million items, making it one of the largest repositories of information chronicling the German immigration movement to Texas. The collection includes more than a million photographic images, newspapers dating back to 1852, over 300,000 photographic negatives, oral history recordings, government and church records, manuscripts, maps, and extensive genealogical information. The museum comprises over 100,000 artifacts displayed across rotating exhibits, while copies of Prince Carl's correspondence with the Adelsverein, county and city government papers, and historical records document life in New Braunfels and Comal County from the mid-1800s forward.

The Comal County Genealogy Society houses its entire research collection at the Sophienburg, providing public access to a 1,200-book reference library, 19th-century county and church records, cemetery records, ship passenger lists for Germans entering through Galveston, and nearly 500 researched family genealogies. The museum's ongoing "Reflections" oral history program, begun in 1976, records interviews in a state-of-the-art studio and airs on radio station KGNB every Sunday. The reading room allows researchers to explore these invaluable resources that preserve the legacy of German settlers who shaped Texas Hill Country.
